20 Years On, 9/11 Memorial Architect Michael Arad Finds Meaning in Absence

Michael Arad’s design for the National September 11 Memorial at the World Trade Center was selected from more than 5,000 entries in a global competition. As the 20th anniversary of the attacks approaches, he recalls his journey of imagining the memorial and its features, and the challenges of memorializing and mourning the victims. Michael also shares his plans for the memorial at the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the role that public spaces and community play in our world.
