ICE Futures Europe is the leading market for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
ICE Futures Europe currently offers derivatives contracts on four types of carbon units: EU Allowances (EUAs), EU Aviation Allowances (EUAAs), Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) and Emissions Reductions Units (ERUs).
Exchange-traded emissions products were first offered by the European Climate Exchange (ECX), which was established in 2005, by listing products on the ICE Futures Europe's trading platform. In 2010, ICE acquired ECX as part of its purchase of the Climate Exchange Plc. ICE's products provide liquid markets, price discovery and transparency for the emissions market, as well as an effective means of complying with the requirements of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). ICE continues to innovate and design contracts which meet the demand for new products and areas of compliance, introducing EU Aviation Allowances futures (EUAAs) in February 2012.
Today, market participants can efficiently manage their carbon price risk with EUA, CER and ERU futures contracts. CO2 emissions trading volumes have experienced strong growth since the first contract was launched in 2005 and now offer participants the world's most liquid markets for carbon emissions.
Over 100 global firms are trading members for ICE emissions products, in addition to the thousands of traders around the world with access to this market via clearing members and brokers.
